Rams head north for second road trip of 2018
TORONTO – Following a rough start to the 2018 portion of their season, the Ryerson Rams will be looking to turn things around as they head north for their second road trip of the new year.
In contrast to their recent trip to Ottawa, which saw the Rams pitted against two of the best teams in the league, this weekend’s opponents have faced significant struggles thus far this season.
On Friday the Rams will make the trip up to Sudbury to face off against the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Ben F. Avery Gymnasium. Boasting a current record of 2-9, the Voyageurs are tied for last place in the OUA’s east division with Ryerson's Saturday opponents, the Nipissing Lakers.
Presently, the Voyageurs struggles are apparent on both ends of the court. Offensively the Voyageurs rank near the bottom of the league in points per game, assists, and field goal percentage. Their only advantage comes in the form of their three-point shooting which, given the Rams capable perimeter defensive skills, shouldn’t prove to be effective against Ryerson. Defensively, Laurentian has struggled significantly, allowing the second-highest points per game thus far this season, with opponents averaging 72.4 points against them.
On the court the Voyageurs are led by fourth-year guard Emily Tinnes (Newmarket, Ont.). The senior guard averages eleven points a game, while leading her team in field goal attempts per game.
Following their game against Laurentian, the Rams will make the trip over to North Bay for Saturday, where they will square off against the Nipissing Lakers at the Robert J Surtees Student Athletics Centre.
Much like the Voyageurs, the Lakers have had some significant troubles of their own thus far this season. The team from North Bay presently ranks last in the league in points per game, offensive rebounds per game, and total rebounds per game. Matched-up against the much larger, and more experienced Rams line-up, the Lakers will have to play the best basketball of their season if they hope of obtaining an upset.
Both games will be available live on OUA.tv with social media updates coming on twitter @ryersonrams and #weRrams.
