D.H. Craighead Award finalists released

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO – The Ryerson University Athletics Department will honour its student-athletes and their accomplishments at the 70th Annual Athletic Awards Celebration on Saturday, April 7 at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel.

Over the course of the next few days, ryersonrams.ca will highlight the finalists for all six major awards as we prepare for the big night. Today we showcase the males chosen as finalists for the Outstanding Contribution to Interuniversity Sport, Campus and Community Life award.

The D.H. Craighead award is given to a student-athlete, preferably in his graduating year, who has provided leadership and participation in a specific ongoing activity or in a collection of community and/or campus life activities. Also, this recipient is usually involved in a leadership role on a team, maintains a positive attitude both on and off the field of competition, and personifies sportsmanship.

The following Ryerson Rams (in alphabetical order) were nominated and chosen as finalists for the D.H. Craighead award through the awards selection process.

Aaron Armstrong – Hockey
The winner of this award last year, fourth year forward Aaron Armstrong continued to donate his time to the community this season. Armstrong created his own hockey school and used the registration fees to send orphans he met last summer in Cambodia to school for the year. Additionally, Armstrong is a school visit leader and Jays Care Big Sports Day leader as part of the Rams Care program. Armstrong leads and hosts a bible study group for fellow student-athletes and also assists the homeless in the local community as part of the Light Patrol initiative.

Brodie Barrick – Hockey
Third year goalie Brodie Barrick is now a three-time finalist for this award after another impressive workload in the community this year. Barrick was the lead organizer for Ryerson’s Movember campaign, helping the Rams fundraise nearly $6,000 this season. Barrick is one of the lead organizers in the Rams’ 7th Skater program where he meets the participating family before the game, helps the skater get ready for the ice and brings them into the locker room postgame for the full experience. Barrick is also a math tutor at Nelson Mandela Public School.

Andy Mok – Fencing
A first-time finalist for this award, fencer Andy Mok co-led Mindfest, an annual event promoting mental health in partnership with Ryerson and the University of Toronto. Mok has collaborated with the Rainbow Nursing Interest Group to help promote breaking "the gender barrier" by empowering students to advocate for gender/sexual inclusiveness, and fundraised to support the Asian Community AIDS Service conference that will empower Queer Asian youth. Mok is also involved in the Succeed Clean project with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, and fundraised to send 22 nursing students to attend the national CNSA conference.

Kyle Stewart – Soccer
A former winner of this award and now a fourth-straight finalist, fifth year defender Kyle Stewart had another busy season in the community. A winner of Ryerson’s SLC Student Leader Award this year, Stewart donates his time to both the Rams and greater Ryerson community. He is a Rams Care program leader on school visits, at the Nike Basketball Academy, and at Jays Care Big Sports Days, and also volunteers to support other student-athlete initiatives such as the blood donor clinic and Do It For Daron. Stewart will also be participating in this year’s humanitarian trip to Ghana.
