Watson scores twice to lift Rams over Ravens

By Sports Information

Ottawa, Ont. - First-year Victoria Watson (Scarborough, Ont.) scored two goals in the final seven minutes as the Ryerson Rams women's soccer team came from behind to defeat the Carleton Ravens 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Ottawa.

With the win, the Rams remain undefeated and improve to 2-0-1, while the Ravens drop to 1-2. The Ryerson victory is the first over the Ravens since October 23, 2010 and also marks the first time the Rams have ever won at Carleton.

The Ravens would get the first scoring chance of the contest when Vanessa Germano (Ottawa, Ont.) found herself alone in tight but she was denied on a nifty save from Rams keeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.).

Ryerson ended the first half with sustained pressure. A late corner kick resulted in two quality chances for the Rams but they were unable to capitalize and the half ended at 0-0.

The Rams would carry that momentum into the second half. Ryerson made a number of halftime substitutions including Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.), who made an immediate impact. She was sprung loose on a partial breakaway but her shot went high when she tried to chip it over the Carleton keeper. Minutes later, Soraya El-Houni's (Toronto) seeing-eye free kick beat the Raven's keeper but not the cross bar and the game remained scoreless.

The Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute on a 25-yard strike to the top corner from Sarah Zutrauen (Ottawa, Ont.).

The game remained 1-0 until the 83rd minute when Watson netted her first OUA career goal to make it 1-1. Five minutes later she would get her second converting a lengthy run to make it 2-1.

The Rams will visit the Ottawa Gee-Gees (1-1) Saturday at 1:00pm.
