Mustangs hand Rams first loss of the season

By Jessica Pincente

LONDON, Ont. - After a three-game win streak and the best start in team history, the Ryerson Rams suffered their first loss of the year to the Western Mustangs by a final score of 3-1.

A scoreless first period left both teams scratching their heads.  Both Ryerson and Western have been strong up front this season, and yet both teams were struggling to score goals through the first 30 minutes of the game.

The second period saw an offensive attack from both sides.  Western scored two goals in six minutes to put them up 2-0 over the Rams half-way through the game.  Ryerson’s Madison Lalonde (Blenheim, Ont.) opened and closed the scoring for her team late in the second period, intercepting a Mustangs pass and shooting short-side past the Western goalie.

The third period saw few quality chances on either side, but the Rams continued to push for the equalizer.  With their goalie pulled and an extra attacker on the ice, Ryerson’s offense was doing their best to tally a tying goal, but the Mustangs’ Amanda Pereira (Oakville, Ont.) scored one into the empty net to put her team up 3-1 to close out the game.

The Mustangs outshot the Rams by a total of 47-31, and despite a solid performance from Rams goaltender Rachel Seely (Ottawa, Ont.), the Rams were handed their first loss of the season.

Ryerson’s power play, which saw a lot of success through the first few games of the season, didn’t come into play tonight.  The Rams went 0/5 on the man-advantage, and weren’t able to capitalize on any chances.  On the other hand, the Rams penalty kill went 4/4 against the Mustangs. Though a lack of goal scoring seems to be amongst the top of the Rams issues as of late, their play on the penalty kill has been a strong point for them this season so far.

Looking ahead, the Rams will travel back home for an upcoming weekend homestand against the Brock Badgers Friday and a rematch against the Mustangs Saturday night.
