Rams pull off overtime win in Waterloo

By Ryan Bacic

WATERLOO, Ont. – It was a victorious night for the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team as they were able to come away with a 3-2 overtime win against the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field on Friday night.

As predicated, the game took on an offensively tone early on in the match-up. With both teams placing a heavy focus on fast paced neutral zone offensive rushes, combined with a large emphasis on point shots, neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the first period play. Couple this with the fact that the zone-defensive coverage from the Ryerson squadron had markedly improved since last week’s match-up with the York Lions, and it is little wonder that both teams headed into the first intermission tied up at 0-0.

It would in the second period however, when the game would begin to pick up the pace. With only five minutes left to play in the second period, Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) would rocket in the Rams first goal of the game, and his fifth goal of the season to put the Rams up 1-0. Not even two minutes would go by when teammate Brandon Hughes (Oakville, Ont.) would force in his first goal of the season, to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the visiting team, they would not be able to head into the locker room with a two goal advantage, as only eight-seconds after the goal by Hughes, Waterloo’s Keigan Goetz (New Hamburg, Ont.) would respond with a goal of his own put Waterloo on the board.

Throughout the third period, the Rams were able to hold on to their lead through a combination of tough defensive pressure and consistent offensive rushes to keep the Warriors on their toes. Unfortunately for the Rams, the Warriors still had some fight in them, and in the dying minutes of the third period, Waterloo’s Keigan Goetz (New Hamburg, Ont.) would fire in his second goal of the game to tie up the scoreboard and force the contest into overtime.

Going into the overtime period, the pressure of having to perform seemed to weigh down on the home team. Consistent giveaways and lackadaisical shot attempts gave Ryerson countless opportunities to score in the extra period. And, unfortunately for the Warriors, the Rams were able to capitalize on one such occasion, as Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) rocketed in his second goal of the contest to give the Rams the 3-2 win in OT.

The Rams will be back in action on Wednesday, November 8, in St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers at 7:15 pm. Fans can catch all the action by tuning into and by following the Ryerson Rams on twitter @ryersonrams.
