Rams stunned by Lancers in Windsor

By Ryan Bacic

WINDSOR, Ont. – It was an unfortunate evening for the Ryerson Rams, as they fell 7-2 to the Windsor Lancers at the South Windsor Arena on Friday night.

Coming into the game on Friday night, the Rams had begun to accumulate a winning streak, having just come off of big wins against Lakehead University and Waterloo.  Additionally, the Rams had previously beaten the Lancers early this season during their home opener on October 15.  While tonight’s contest was hard fought, the odds on the night were pointing towards an easier Rams victory.

However, right from the outset of the match, the Rams seemed unable to play up to the caliber that recent expectations have shaped.  From the initial puck drop of the first period the Lancers overwhelmed the Rams offensively, nearly matching them in shots taken within the period, and occupying the Rams zone for long stretches of the first twenty minutes.  And while the Rams came out onto the ice ready to put this game away early, luck did not appear to be on their side in the first, as shot after shot simply could not find the twine of the Lancers net.

In opposition to this, the Lancers appeared to possess no trouble at all in accumulating goals during the first period.  Three minutes into the first period of play, Windsor freshman forward Ryan Shaw (Barrie, Ont.), tucked away a bouncing puck that so fortunately placed, that it left the announcer in awe over the chances of such an event occurring.  Just two minutes later, the Lancers would be able to supplement their lead, as forward Brennan Feasey (Strathroy, Ont.) fired in a close-range wrist shot to put the Lancers up 2-0.

With the pace of play on behalf of the Rams proving to be ultimately sluggish, the task of pulling the visiting team back into the game would be placed upon the shoulders of all-star forward Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.), would provided the Rams lone goal of the first, fourteen minutes into the period.

Unfortunately for the visiting team, the Lancers pursuit of a comfortable lead proved to be relentless.  Just two minutes after the goal scored by Mistele, Chris Scott (Windsor, Ont.) would score off of a power play to put the Lancers up 3-1 heading into the locker room.

As the second period of play began, the Rams seemed to completely fall apart.  Throughout the second period, the Lancers would be able to acquire two unanswered goals, provided by Adam Burnett (Hamilton, Ont.) and Ian Parker (Florence, Kty.) respectively, and the Rams defense seemed to be stunned in place.  Motionless defenders, and an inability to fall back off of the offensive to cover their own zone, left the Ryerson net vulnerable to consistent Lancer attacks.

Unfortunately for the Rams, prospects would not get much better in the final period of regulation.  While Rams forward Marcus Hinds (Toronto, Ont.) was able to provide the Rams with their second goal of the night early in the period, it wouldn’t take long for the home team to respond.  In fact, it only took fifty-seconds for Lancers forward Dan Beaudoin (Windsor, Ont.) to push the Lancers lead back up to four goals.  Following this, Lancer veteran Kyle Hope (Blenheim, Ont.) would provide the final nail in the coffin for the Rams, as he provided the home team with their seventh goal of the evening, their highest goal total of the season.

The Rams will be back in action on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25, as they prepare for a weekend road trip to Ottawa.  On the Friday, the Rams will travel to the Minto Sports Complex as they prepare to take on the University of Ottawa GeeGees at 7:30 pm.  Following this, the Rams will make the trip across the nation’s capital on Saturday to the Carleton University Ice House, to take on the Carleton Ravens at 7:00 pm.  Fans will be able to catch all the action by watching the games live on, and by following the Rams on twitter @ryersonrams.
