Rams face first loss of the season at Waterloo

By Christian Ryan

WATERLOO, Ont. - All good things must come to an end. The Ryerson Rams fell for the first time this season, losing 3-0 to the Waterloo Warriors at the Physical Activities Centre on Saturday night.

The loss sees the Rams perfect start to the season come to an end in the last game before the winter break. The Rams now sit at the top of the OUA East at 6-1. They are equal with defending OUA champions the McMaster Marauders with 12 points on top of the OUA standings.

Waterloo proved to have an exceptionally effective game. The sweep came at something of a surprise as the Warriors had begun the season with a losing record and entered the game off of a loss to the York Lions whom the Rams have defeated previously. With the victory, the Warriors improve to a 4-5 record and end the first half of the season before the winter break on a high note.

While the Rams stuck with a starting lineup seen in the previous night’s win against the Guelph Gryphons, the first back-to-back matchup of the season could have lead to some fatigue as the matchups were unprecedented this year. This dynamic saw Waterloo open with a dominant 25-13 set. While the final two sets saw closer fights by the Rams (25-21, 25-19), production was stunted past close scores at technical timeouts and the comebacks were halted.

The match was lead predominantly by fifth-year seniors, as Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) and Adam Anagnostopoulos (Waterloo, Ont.) saw their typical effective play continue despite the back-to-back starts. However, production from around the roster was otherwise muted by a hard-charging Warriors squad. Waterloo’s Braden Cok (Waterloo, Ont.) was entirely about the offence tonight, putting up a game-high 18 points.

The Rams will now look to regroup over the break, with the hopes of returning to continue to dominate the OUA in 2018.
