Despite loss at Carleton, Rams show they mean business in 2018
OTTAWA, Ont. - In their first meeting since the 2016-2017 U SPORTS gold medal game, the Ryerson Rams fell to the Carleton Ravens 89-80 at the Ravens' Nest on on Friday night.
The loss sees the Rams start the 2018 portion of the season with their six game winning streak coming to an end for an 8-3 record, while the undefeated Ravens improve to 11-0. Cameron Smythe (Vancouver, BC) and Yasiin Joseph (Ottawa, Ont.) dominated with a combined 45 of Carleton’s points, with Smythe matching his OUA career high of 23.
Even though the Rams leave Carleton with the loss, they showed a rested focus and effectiveness that kept them in contention for the win throughout. Manny Diressa (Toronto, Ont.) put up a game high 26 points, marking his fourth consecutive match with over 20 points. Diressa and the other elder statesmen of the Rams, some of whom battled injury throughout the first half of the season, showed their strength and focus from the break as JV Mukama (Hamilton, Ont.), Adam Voll (Kitchener, Ont.), and Filip Vujadinovic (Burlington, Ont.) all put up double digits.
The Rams also impressed defensively, maintaining their close competition with superior rebounding and forcing turnovers. However, the Ravens’ scoring prowess and accuracy would keep the Rams at bay, ramping up every time the Rams evened the score.
Carleton keeps their composure and the victory, but the Rams come away from the match showing that they are ready and able to take on the defending champions. They will have their chance again Saturday, January 27th, as the Ravens travel to Toronto to face the Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Tomorrow, the Rams are set to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall. Rams fans can follow the action live on OUA.tv at 8 p.m. ET.
