Rams take charge in win over Laurentian
SUDBURY, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams snapped their two-game losing skid on Friday night in an emphatic way as they came away with a 78-52 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury.
Right from the beginning of the match it was apparent that this contest would belong firmly to the Rams. Both offensively and defensively, the Rams proved to outmatch the Voyageurs in every capacity, outscoring them in three out of four quarters, while holding them to one of their lowest point totals of the season.
The first half saw the Rams take full advantage of their overwhelming size and strength, as they muscled their way to several baskets in the paint. Leading the way for the Rams in scoring throughout the first half with sixteen points, Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) proved to be the cornerstone for Ryerson’s offensive strategy, with the majority of passing lanes being directed towards her in the paint. Additionally, the Rams were greatly assisted by forward Bronwyn Williams (Toronto, Ont.) who acquired six points, to go along with six rebounds and one block in the first half, proving herself invaluable on both ends of the court.
Leading 40-21 heading into the second half, the Rams offensive breadth seemed to only improve as their bench made considerable contributions in the final two quarters. The Rams bench provided 19 total points in the second half, tying the total amount provided by the Rams starters. Additionally, the Rams field goal percentage had improved in the second half, as they connected on half of all of their field goal attempts throughout the final two quarters.
The Rams were lead in scoring on the evening by Sofia Paska and freshman guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) who put up 24 and 11 points, respectively.
In contrast to these impressive figures exhibited by the Rams, the Voyageurs struggled on both ends of the court throughout the entire match. With a a total field-goal percentage below thirty-percent, the Voyageurs struggled to connect offensively throughout the contest relying predominately on three-point shots to cut into the Rams ever-increasing lead.
The Rams will be back in action on Saturday night, as they make the trip over to take on the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay. The game can be seen live on OUA.tv at 6:00 pm, and live updates will be provided on the Ryerson Rams twitter feed @ryersonrams.
