Rams push for comeback but fall to efficient Badgers

By Christian Ryan

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - It’s been no secret that the Ryerson Rams thrive under high-pressure situations. However, the Rams’ luck finally ran out as they fell 3-2 in five sets against the Brock Badgers at Bob Davis Gym Friday night.

The Rams hit the road to St. Catharines off a weekend sweep of the top teams in the OUA East. Defeating both the York Lions and Nipissing Lakers in five sets over the previous weekend, the Rams were confident heading into Brock to face the Badgers who sat at the bottom of the OUA West. However, the Badgers had been showing a change of pace in their season after picking up their first win of the year, and were ready to give the Rams a run for their money.

The Badgers put up a formidable effort early on, quickly forcing the Rams to use all of their timeouts early in each of the first two sets. As the Rams tried to regroup, the Badgers were able to pull away, taking the first set by 10 points and the second by seven.

From there, the Rams would show their usual form as lead by a 29 point performance by de facto leader Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.). The offensive push of the Rams put considerable pressure on the hard charging Badgers. The third set would prove to be a close competition, with the Rams only slightly claiming the win 25-22, but it was enough to put them back in a winning stride. As they took the fourth set with a cleaner 25-18 score, they entered their familiar fifth set in control of the match.

Despite a strong showing from the Rams entering the final set, the Badgers would reignite the flame that saw them dominate early in the match. It all came down to the wire, much as it did the previous Sunday against the Lakers. However, this time it was the Rams’ combatants who would claim home victory as they took the fifth and final set 16-14.

Rams’ head coach Adam Simac joked that the team was trying to give him heart problems with their close games as of late. Now, they will have a chance to rest and hope for a return to form as they next take to the court at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET as they welcome the Queen’s Gaels.
