Rams fall to Toronto in overtime
TORONTO – In their final match-up with them of the 2017-18 season, the Ryerson Rams fell 4-3 to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in overtime on Saturday night.
The loss adds to the ongoing struggles that the Rams have been having in the 2018 portion of their season, having gone 3-5 in their past eight games.
Saturday night’s contest heated up rather quickly, with the Varsity Blues opening up the scoring courtesy of Toronto forward Aidan Wallace (Toronto, Ont.), who put his team up 1-0 nine minutes into the opening frame.
Luckily, Ryerson would have a response, as senior forward Lucas Froese (Grunthal, Man.) would tap in his third goal of the season to tie up the scoreboard with less than five minutes to play in the first period.
In contrast to the back-and-forth contest that was exhibited in the first, the second period would firmly belong to the Rams, as they would jump out to a two-goal lead courtesy of goals provided by Cavin Leth (Taber, Alta.) and Aaron Armstrong (Teeswater, Ont.) less than a minute apart from one another.
Unfortunately, the Blues would find a way to stop this Rams surge, as Toronto defenseman Matt Heffernan (London, Ont.) would step-up huge for his team and record his first goal of the season to pull the Blues within one goal as the second period drew to a close.
The Blues would be able to capitalize upon the momentum provided by Heffernan in the third period, as defenseman Justin Brand (Scarborough, Ont.) would tie up the scoreboard eight minutes into the final frame of regulation time.
With the Rams seemingly having no response to this Blues offensive surge, the game was forced into overtime, where it would be quickly decided by Toronto defenseman Willy Paul (Burlington, Ont.) who would fire in the game winning goal twenty seconds into the extra frame.
The Rams will be back in action on Thursday, February 1, as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at 7:15 pm.
