Rams prevail in tight match against Queen's
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams were put to the test for the second time this season against the Queen’s Gaels, but it was the Rams who came out on top to secure a 3-1(25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20) match victory.
The Rams were taken back by a slow start but began to pull away with the lead after the first technical timeout. The remainder of the game played out similarly to the opponents ‘last matchup on January 28th, 2018 - the Gaels would take the second set and the Rams would come back to win two difficult set wins and claim a 3-1 match victory.
Alicia Lam (Oakville, Ont.) saw the start for Ryerson, tallying an impressive 43 assists on the match. Hitters Janelle Albert (Brampton, Ont.) and Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) were outstanding for the Rams tonight, each collecting 17 and 18 kills respectively. Four players on the team had two service aces, including Veltman, Lindsay Kleuskens (London, Ont.), captain Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.), and Cailin Wark (Georgetown, Ont.)
The Rams tallied a total of 19 errors in four sets today, a feat that the typically systematic team would like to fix before the playoffs begin in two weeks.
Since coming off a recent 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) sweep over the reigning OUA champions in the McMaster Marauders, the Queen’s Gaels have been riding a hot streak that was put to an end Friday night against the Toronto Varsity Blues in a 3-2 (25-22, 25-18, 26-28, 26-24, 15-8) loss.
As of last weekend, the Rams have officially clinched the number one spot in their conference. With playoff seeding to be determined next weekend, the Rams will take on the RMC Paladins and the Nipissing Lakers on February 23rd and February 25th, respectively.
