Late goal forces Rams to settle for draw
TORONTO – After striking first early in the game, the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team couldn’t hold onto a 1-0 lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Trent Excalibur on Sunday afternoon at Downsview Park.
It took just six minutes for the Rams to get on the board on Sunday, as Alessia Carvalho headed home her first goal of the season on a cross from BreAnah Webster. The goal was almost a carbon copy of Saturday’s goal scored by Alex Rodkin.
“The mentality of being up by one at the sixth minute got the whole team going…it’s just keeping [that momentum] for the whole rest of the game is a challenge that moving forward we have to look for,” said goal scorer Carvalho.
The Rams had several opportunities to extend their lead throughout the game, particularly in the 75th minute. Rodkin provided a cross into the box where Maria Poveda took a strike that had eyes for the bottom left corner of the net but when the Excalibur goalkeeper couldn’t reach it, a defender was there to clear the ball off the line.
That big play seemed to give Trent some momentum and in the 84th minute they were rewarded when Abigail Hubble launched a lofting shot from nearly 40 yards out. The Rams had partially cleared a Trent corner kick but Hubble’s shot floated into the top left corner just out of the outstretched fingers of Rams keeper Elisa Lapadula to tie the game.
Neither team were able to generate much in terms of quality scoring chances after the tying goal and the teams each picked up a point in the 1-1 draw.
“We needed to capitalize on our opportunities – there were six or seven chances we could have had that in my opinion were clear goal scoring chances,” said interim head coach, Natalie Bukovec, after the game.
Despite feeling like they let one slip away, the Rams earned four points on opening weekend and sit in a four-way tie for first place in the OUA East. Ryerson will be back in action on Sunday, September 2 when they visit the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-0-1) at 1:00 p.m. at Varsity Stadium.
