Rams start season strong with 10-1 win over Warriors

By Cara Gilhula

TORONTO - A sea of blue and gold filled the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Wednesday night for the Ryerson Rams home opener against the Waterloo Warriors, and little did the fans know what the Rams had in store.

It all began 14 seconds into the first period, when Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) tipped the puck into the net from  Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont.) to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. This was Mistele’s first goal of the season, and a great start to his return from injury. Although, the firsts did not stop there for the Rams.

Later in the period, during his first OUA game, Mathew Santos (Toronto, Ont.) scored his first ever OUA goal from  Steven Harland (Toronto, Ont.). The Rams lead 2-0, and it was only 6:32 seconds into the game.

Two minutes later at 8:32, Cavin Leth (Taber, Alta.) scored his first goal of the season with a powerful snipe shot on net. The Rams were up 3-0.

Now with 12:37 seconds into the first period, Vince Figliomeni (Bolton, Ont.) was next to find himself on the scoresheet for the Rams with his first goal of the season with assists by Harland and Mark Shoemaker (Mississauga, Ont.).

With 4:06 left in the period, the Rams were short handed. Yet, this was no problem for first year Patrick Fellows (Mississauga, Ont.) who intercepted the puck from the Warriors, and was able to earn his first goal of the season. The Rams led 5-0.

Now, some may have thought that the scoring for the Rams was complete for the first period once the last minute of play began. However, Mitchell Skapski (Abbotsford, B.C) scored his first goal with 42.9 seconds left, with assists by David Miller (Burlington, Ont.) and Figliomeni.

This concluded the score at 6-0 for the first period. Ryerson had 21 shots on net versus Waterloo’s nine.

The second period started off a little slower for the Rams. They were able to maintain pressure and control the puck with quick changes. Although, the scoring did not begin as early as the first period.

Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) started the scoring off 7:45 into the second period with a great goal. The assists came from McCool and Mistele, proving strong lineups for the start of the season.

In the latter half of the second period, Santos took advantage of the power play and found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, unassisted with 4:11 seconds left. The best part for the Rams, however, was that he was only getting warmed up. With 2:00 minutes left in the second period, Santos found an opening from Jared Walsh (Toronto, Ont.) for a breakaway, and to score a shorthanded, hat trick to goal to bring the Rams lead to 9-0.

Considering Santos had to take a year off last year, “it was a long time coming,” he said. “A lot of the guys were looking for me out there. I want to play in all situations of the game, offensively and defensively, so I was enjoying myself and having some fun. I am excited for the rest of the season, and I know the guys are too.”

Unfortunately, what looked like a promising shutout for the Rams was short lived. The Waterloo Warriors were able to minimize the Rams nine point lead by one after Warriors' Kenny Turner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored with 23.2 seconds left of the second period.

The Rams saw more chances in the third period, except Walsh was the only one to further the Rams lead by going through the five-hole.

Throughout the game the Rams saw strong defense from Zachary Shankar (Prescott, Ont.). Considering that size is something that the Rams wanted to see more of this season, Shankar spent no time wasting this advantage.

Goalie Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.) kept the Rams in the game with 23 strong saves. This allowed the Rams to find confidence in their lineups, and get their necessary reps in.

The final score was 10-1 for the Rams. Ryerson ended with a total of 44 shots on net to the Warriors 24.

The next game for the Rams is at the Gryphon Centre Arena on October 11th, where the Rams will take on the the Guelph Gryphons. For updates follow us on Twitter.
