Lalonde overtime winner lifts Rams over Voyageurs
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team continued their winning ways Saturday night when they knocked off the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-2 in overtime.
Tied at two’s both teams were left looking for a hero. Insert Madison Lalonde and her late game heroics.
Lalonde found herself in behind all of the Laurentian Voyageurs on the ice and alone with just the goalie. Lalonde made a move, fooling the goalie and giving Ryerson the win.
The Rams were playing their second game in 24 hours but showed no sign of that early in the game while they outshot the Voyageurs 5-0 in the first five minutes of the game.
The only thing that slowed down the Ryerson offence was a penalty, and although the penalty allowed Laurentian to get their first shot of the game, that’s all that came of it.
From that point on both teams traded scoring chances and with just over seven minutes to play in the period the Voyageurs forced a turnover and scored.
For the first time in this young season the Rams found themselves trailing in a game. They kept their foot on the gas outshooting Laurentian 13-8 in the first period, but were unable to add one and they went into the second period down 1-0.
The second period saw Laurentian throw the first punch when they added to their lead just a few minutes in.
But Ryerson didn’t hang their heads and bounced right back thanks to Brooklyn Gemmill finding the back of the net to get the lead back down to one.
With just over a minute left in the period Ryerson continued to pressure, and their constant pressure was rewarded when Lauren Nicholson snapped a shot past the Voyageurs goalie tying the game 2-2.
Play tightened up in the third period and both teams had chances on the power play but failed to make anything of it and after a back and forth period it was going to be overtime that decided the winner.
The Rams will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 25 when they take on Guelph at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
