Rams wrap up regular season with tight victory
TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams wrapped up their regular season campaign with a 2-1 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday evening at Downsview Park.
The Rams did all their offensive damage in the first half of the game, beginning with a goal at the eight-minute mark. Freshman Mirza Custovic (Toronto, Ont.) netted his sixth goal of the season in the early minutes of the match, and it wasn’t until later in the half that the Rams would strike again.
Kussai Salman (Toronto, Ont.) scored his third goal of the year in the 44th minute, sending the Rams into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Salman, a graduating senior playing his last regular season as a Ram, says the goal was a great way to wrap up his career at Ryerson.
“It felt really good to score that goal,” says Salman. “With everyone out here to support me tonight, it was great. It's nice to end off my career on a positive note."
Nipissing would add a goal in second-half injury time, but it was far too late to have an impact on the momentum of the match. The Rams walked out of the regular season with a 2-1 win over the Lakers.
Head coach Filip Prostran says the team is happy to enjoy some time off before they leap back into action as playoffs approach.
“I was very happy with the performance today,” says Prostran. “We'll get back into it slowly this week, but we're excited
The game marked the end of two careers for the Rams: Salman, one of two goal scorers in the match, and Raheem Rose (Toronto, Ont.), the fifth-year midfielder.
Rose, one of the program’s all-time leading scorers, is the only men’s soccer player to be named a U SPORTS First-Team All-Canadian twice in his career. His presence, as well as Salman’s, will be missed both on and off the field next season.
The Rams will hit the field for the OUA quarterfinal match on October 28 at 7:00 PM at Downsview Park.
