Rams hold off third quarter charge to beat Queen's
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team took down the Queen’s Gaels 84-62 Friday night, pushing their record to 12-1 on the season.
This is Ryerson’s second straight win and it keeps them just one game behind the number one seed Carleton Ravens.
The game started for Ryerson like many other games have started this season, with the Rams taking charge early and taking charge often. After the first quarter of play Ryerson had a 15-point lead.
The offence was on display and the defence was just as good as they held the Gaels to nine points in the opening 10 minutes.
Ryerson continued that solid play into the second quarter and had a 20-point lead halfway through the game.
At the half Ryerson was led in scoring by fifth-year senior Filip Vujadinovic who had 16 points on 7-9 shooting. Vujadinovic has been a key piece for this Rams team for a number of years now and has seen his role increase even more in his final year with the team.
But the Rams wouldn’t be able to coast in the second half of this game as Queen’s threw a counter punch in the third quarter. A Vujadinovic three extended the Rams lead to start the half, however, Queen’s wouldn’t roll over and went on a run of their own cutting the Rams lead down to under double digits twice.
With the game beginning to swing in Queen’s favour the Rams took over and in a blink of an eye the lead was back up to 15.
When the quarter was said and done Queen’s had cut the Rams lead by seven points, winning the third 27-20.
But Ryerson put any thought of a comeback to rest in the fourth quarter by holding Queen’s to just eight points.
Ryerson was led in scoring by Jean-Victor Mukama. His game high 25 points were four more than Vujadinovic's 21 and the two combined to go 18-27 from the field.
Third in scoring for Ryerson was Warsame Mohamed. Not only did he find himself in the starting lineup for the first time this year but he added 16 points, making this the second straight game in double digits for him.
Ryerson will be back in action Saturday night when they take on the York Lions at 8:00 p.m.
