Rams make quick work of RMC

By Jessica Pincente

KINGSTON — Another 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-12) victory for the No. 4 Ryerson Rams — this time coming against the RMC Paladins — saw the OUA East’s top team tally their sixth sweep of the season on a chilly January afternoon in Kingston.

The win against RMC marked the team’s fourth win of the month and their sixth consecutive victory. Leading the charge for Ryerson was Theanna Vernon (Scarborough), who recorded 12 kills and two solo blocks in three sets.

The Rams would assert dominance throughout much of the first set, leading by nine points at the first technical timeout and going on to take a 25-13 win in the opening frame.

The second set saw a more difficult battle on both ends, but the Rams again would pull ahead 16-10 at the technical. A solid end to the set had the Rams take their second straight win by a wide margin of victory, this time prevailing 25-14 and heading into the third with a ubiquitous sense of confidence.

The Rams would carry their momentum into the final set of the match, remaining strong on the attack and closing the game out with a commanding 25-12 win in the third.

Ryerson outside hitter Kelly Shaefer (Uxbridge, Ont.) established a new career high in kills (10) and points (12.0) in the victory over RMC. Rams attacker Sara Piana (Ottawa, Ont.) also tallied 11 kills and just two errors on 18 attempts, while fourth-year libero Demetra Maragos (Vancouver, B.C.) notched 12 digs in the win.

The Rams will hit the court tomorrow afternoon against the Queen’s Gaels at 1:00 p.m. The match will be broadcasted live on
