Rams top Toronto in cross-town matchup
TORONTO — In their lowest scoring game of the season thus far, the No. 5 Ryerson Rams earned a 53-42 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night at the Goldring Centre in Toronto.
Ryerson’s Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) recorded her second double-double of the season in the win over Toronto, finishing the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Varsity Blues would take a 6-4 lead in the opening four minutes of the game, but the Rams did a good job of bouncing back and eventually outscoring Toronto 12-10 in the first quarter.
The second quarter was extremely low scoring on both sides, but the Rams would still edge Toronto 9-6 and head into the half with a five-point lead over their Toronto rivals.
Ryerson’s dominant showing in the third gave them an 11-point edge heading into the final quarter of the game. The Rams would secure a 53-42 victory in the fourth, despite being outscored by Toronto 12-10.
Rams second year Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) had 14 points, two assists, and two steals in 25 minutes on the court. Ryerson guard Hayley Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) totaled eight rebounds in the game while senior forward Katherine Follis (Toronto, Ont.) had nine points and six rebounds.
Ryerson could not sink a single shot from beyond the arc in the matchup, going 0-15 through 40 minutes against Toronto. The Varsity Blues also struggled in three-point territory tonight but managed to sink two shots in the second half, finishing the game going 2-25 (eight percent) from downtown.
The Rams will enjoy a break for the rest of the weekend, resuming action next Friday against the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay.
