Vukovic, Vernon lead Rams to victory over Lakehead
THUNDER BAY — The no. 2 Ryerson Rams overcame their first set struggles to earn a 3-1 (21-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-16) win against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Sunday afternoon in their final road game of the regular season.
Leading the Rams to victory was captain Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) who finished the game with 13 kills and four total blocks. Rookie middle Teodora Vukovic (Mississauga, Ont.) had a career-best performance against Lakehead, tallying seven total blocks, eight kills, and 14.0 points across three sets.
Ryerson struggled to control the match in the first set, falling behind 16-11 at the technical and failing to dig up Lakehead’s attacks. Both teams found themselves tallying back-to-back service errors near the end of the opening set as the match seemed to spiral out of control on both sides of the net.
The Thunderwolves would bring the game back within their rule and took a 25-21 win in the first, earning their seventh set win of the season against the second-ranked team in the country.
The Rams seemed to return to familiar form in the second set. Allowing Lakehead to take just four points after the technical timeout, the Rams dominated play to earn a 25-12 win in the second.
Lakehead battled hard in the third set, keeping the game within arms reach but failing to overtake the attacking Rams. Ryerson would pull out a hard-fought 25-22 win in the third and headed into the fourth with a distinct sense of determination.
The Rams succeeded in their task to close out the match in the fourth, taking a 25-16 win in the set and claiming a 3-1 win against Lakehead.
Ryerson’s Sara Piana (Ottawa, Ont.) finished the game with 10 kills and six total blocks, while outside hitter Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) had 24 digs through four sets. Rookie setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) tallied 38 assists in the win.
Looking ahead, the Rams will host the McMaster Marauders next Sunday at 2:00 PM in their regular season finale. Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
