Sandeson celebrates with Rams during senior night

By Cara Gilhula

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) to the McMaster Marauders on Sunday night during their last regular season home game.

After only one season with the Rams, Adam Sandeson will be graduating with a respected career from the blue and gold.

“It was kind of weird coming in, being the one old guy with a bunch of younger guys, but we really merged as a team and have gotten pretty close this year,” says Sandeson.

In regards to Sanderson's graduation Xander Ketrzynski says, “It’s sad. He’s reliable, he’s very reliable, you always know he is going to go for everything and pass a good ball.”

Sandeson played in 18 matches, earning himself a total of 168 digs and 2.51 digs per set.

“It’s been fun. Obviously, if I am still playing volleyball at 23 I have fun. I am kind of the guy to teach these younger guys a thing or two about the game. I like to think of myself as a leader because I can bring that experience and help get the guys through times where they might be missing serves or missing hits, to just tell them, ‘It’s okay, the next point is just as important, don’t worry about the last one, just move on.”

The Rams came out buzzing against the No. 4 Marauders. First year Omari Young was quick off the block and set out with smart offensive plays to help put the Rams in a strong position.

Xander Ketrzynski was smooth sailing when needed, and continued to push the Rams to be up 16-12 at the technical. Ketrzynski lead the matchup for the Rams with 12 kills.

Graduate Adam Sandeson moved well on the court as he anticipated the Marauders ball placements. He got the ball up anyway he could, and ended with a total of 11 digs for the night.

All the while Greg Vukets lead the front row with Navreet Suhan. Together they not only helped keep the Rams heads in the game, they were up for the block, and Vukets had a number of great cross court sets to Ketrzynski who finished it off. Notably, Vukets also totalled eight digs.

Both Jordan Baric and Joel Hannan stepped up on the court to help the Rams. Baric earned 10 kills and seven digs, where Hannan saw five kills and eight digs.

Unfortunately, the Marauders were capitalizing on the Rams mistakes to tie the game 19-19. The Rams fell 25-23 and lost their momentum.

“We really had them the first set, but we made some dumb mistakes that were four, five in a row that really lost us.  I think if we took that first set the outcome today would have been very different,” says Suhan.

Entering the second set, the Rams put up a fight with a great rally, yet the Marauders captured the first point and continued to advance past the Rams. At the second technical the Rams were down 16-7.

Ryerson saw a number of great hustles by Suhan, Ketrzynski, and Sean Shultis, but it wasn’t enough. With a total of eight errors in the second set to the Marauders two, the Rams dropped another one 25-16.

“Most of their starters are in third, fourth or even fifth year,” says Ketrzynski.  “It’s about experience over time.”

In the third set the Rams struggled to find their offensive and defensive push to hold off the Marauders. They totalled only nine kills to the Marauders 16, which put them down 16-10 at the technical. From there the Rams could not come back and settled with the 25-17 loss.

“We knew coming in that McMaster is the team to beat in the OUA, so our goal was to go out there compete with them and make a statement for ourselves. Obviously that didn’t happen, but we’re gearing up for next weekend now,” says Sandeson.

The Rams will begin the Forsyth Cup playoffs next weekend when they host the Windsor Lancers in the OUA quarter-final on March 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
