TORONTO - A three goal performance by Kassie Roache was the difference for the No.10 Toronto Varsity Blues as they knocked off the Ryerson Rams 3-0 in OUA women’s regular season hockey action at Varsity Arena Thursday night.

BOXSCORE

An unassisted tally by the third year just 55 seconds into the game got the ball rolling for the University of Toronto early.

Ryerson pushed back though. Following Roache’s first of the season to open the scoring, the Rams woke up and dominated for the majority of the frame. Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.) manufactured a number of chances for herself in the first twenty minutes, but none was better than an opportunity she had two minutes after Roache’s marker.

Cruising into the slot, the fourth year forward fired a low shot that the Varsity Blues’ goaltender Katey Teekasingh kicked away. Forfar quickly picked up the rebound and shot again, but was robbed by Teekasingh’s diving effort across the crease.

The phenomenal stop kept the University of Toronto up 1-0 until Roache struck again late in the second period. A point shot by Julia Szulewska was tipped on net by Taylor Day and resulted in a scramble in front of Ryerson’s netminder Sydney Authier (Wallaceburg, Ont.). Before the Rams could recover, Roache swept the loose puck between the pipes on the far side of the net to the double the Varsity Blues’ advantage.

Roache found the back of the net one more time in the opening minute of the third period to complete her hat trick and round out the scoring in this one.

Teekasingh finished with 27 saves for the win in net and the first shutout of her U SPORTS career while Authier surrendered three goals on 30 shots.

The loss drops Ryerson to 4-2-13-4 this season. They remain in a tie for eleventh place in the OUA standings with the York Lions (4-2-12-4). The University of Toronto, meanwhile, improves to 14-2-7-0. They move within two points of the second place Nipissing Lakers (13-3-3-3) with one game remaining.

The Rams will look to wrap up their regular season on a positive note Saturday. They travel to Waterloo to take on the fourth place Warriors (11-2-7-2) at the Columbia Ice Field. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

NOTES: In their previous meeting this season on October 20th, 2016, Ryerson defeated the Varsity Blues 2-0 on Mattamy Home Ice. Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) and Forfar scored the goals while Authier made 33 saves for the first U SPORTS shutout of her career… With only one game remaining on the schedule, Green may be in tough to tie the Ryerson individual season point record of 20 set by Kyla Thurston back in 2011-12. Green has 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) so far this season… The Rams have now been shutout eight times in their last 11 games.
