Gartley added to guard Rams blue line in 2017-18

By Adam Jenkins

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team's 2017-18 recruit total has risen to six with the announcement of their next recruit, Teagan Gartley.

The Kitchener, Ont. native is the third incoming defender to be added to Lisa Haley's blue line. Having spent the last three seasons with the Cambridge Jr. Rivulettes of the Provincial Women's Hockey League (PWHL), Gartley will be making the transition to the OUA next season.

"Teagan is a natural fit at Ryerson, both academically and athletically. She is a very bright student and dedicated, talented athlete," said Rams bench boss Lisa Haley. "Recognized as a selfless team leader at the club level, Teagan clearly puts the needs of her team first. She leads by example in so many ways, whether it is through academics, fitness, or on the ice. Teagan is a steady stay-at-home defender, capable of playing a shut-down role for our team."
Leadership and talent is evident in Gartley, earning the role of assistant captain with her Rivulettes team last season, an honour she describes as the highlight of her athletic career so far.

"I would consider myself hard working, physical, and dedicated to my role on the team," says Gartley. "I would also describe myself as enthusiastic towards building friendships with teammates and being an overall team player."

Her on-ice abilities have also been recognized at the national level as well. Gartley recently attended the U16 Team Canada conditioning and selection camp.

"When I toured Ryerson I knew it was the right place for me. I fell in love with the Mattamy [Athletic] Centre and all the other facilities Ryerson has to offer," reflected Gartley. "I really liked the energy and atmosphere of the school and I am very excited to start the program I chose."

An honour roll student at Preston High School since 2013, Gartley will be enrolled in Ryerson's Biomedical Sciences program beginning in the fall.
