Rams open Queen's Cup playoffs Wednesday

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO – Get ready hockey fans, because the most exciting time of the year is upon us! The Queen’s Cup Playoffs officially begin on February 14 at 7:15 pm, when the Ryerson Rams will face-off against the Western Mustangs in the first round.

Because of Ryerson’s third-place finish in the OUA’s Western conference, the sixth-seed Mustangs will be forced to contest with the Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in the first installment of a potential three game series.

Heading into these playoffs the Rams will be looking for redemption after their incredible 2016-17 season was cut short by the Windsor Lancers in the second round.

However, unlike last year, which saw the Rams head into the playoffs riding a 9-3 record in the 2017 half of their season, the team will have to muster their momentum from an inner desire to persevere in the face of adversity.  This season the Rams faced significant challenges as they embarked upon the conclusion of the regular season, closing out the last twelve games of the regular season with 5-7 record, which included a two-game losing skid to round out the year.

In comparison, the Rams opponent in this first round, the Western Mustangs, have just come off a 2018 run that stood in stark contrast to their performance in the 2017 portion of their season.  To finish off their regular season, the Western Mustangs collected a record of 9-3, compared to the meager 5 wins that the Mustangs were able to acquire in 2017.

In that span, the Mustangs were able to best the likes of York, Laurier, Lakehead and, unfortunately, the Ryerson Rams.

On the whole the Mustangs playing style offers nothing overtly spectacular.  However, what is worth noting is their offensive prowess in both full strength, and man-advantage moments.

Presently, the Mustangs rank first in the OUA in power-play percentage, and their top five rankings in both shots and shots-per-game suggests an offensive pressure that could hinder opponents who are not prepared defensively.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Rams as they embark upon their playoff journey. Fans wearing gold will receive a food voucher for a free hotdog and bag of chips. For those who cannot make it, the game will be streamed live on and live updates will be provided on the Ryerson Rams twitter @ryersonrams.

Tickets for games one and three are on sale here.
