Rams prepare to face red-hot eastern opponents
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men’s soccer team will be looking to pick up six crucial points this weekend as they head east to take on the RMC Paladins on Saturday and the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday.
The Rams, coming off a scoreless draw against the Carleton Ravens last Sunday, will need to re-engage their forward group. The team hasn’t been held to a zero-goal performance since a 3-0 OUA Final Four loss to the Guelph Gryphons on November 5, 2016.
On a more positive note, Rams captain Abdallah El-Chanti (Toronto, Ont.) sits second in the OUA with seven goals on the season. On the back end, goalkeeper Ali Ghazanfari has two cleansheets on the season so far, ranking second in the OUA in save percentage (.900 percent) and third in goals against average (0.50 GAA).
The team’s strong core will be tested this weekend, as they prepare to take on two strong opponents in the RMC Paladins and the Queen’s Gaels.
The Paladins are coming off a stunning two-game performance last weekend, winning back-to-back games for the first time since 2014. Goalkeeper Johnathan Ardell (Prince George, B.C.) set a new career record with 13 saves in Sunday’s 2-1 win over UOIT, helping the team succeed in their record-breaking weekend. Ardell was later named the OUA and U SPORTS Athlete of the Week for his efforts. With a 2-2-1 record, the Paladins can’t be counted out as an OUA contender, especially this early in the season.
The Gaels, on the other hand, enter the matchup with a 4-1 record on the year. Goalkeeper Alex Jones (Comox, B.C.) leads the OUA with three cleansheet performances on the year; this, coupled with his 1.00 save percentage and 0.00 goals against average, makes him a force to reckon with in the league. The Gaels currently sit one point behind the Rams in the standings, making the matchup a crucial one.
Ryerson will take on RMC on Saturday, September 15 at 3:15 p.m., and Queen’s the following day at 3:15 p.m. in Kingston. Stay up-to-date with this weekend’s results by following the Rams on Twitter, @RyersonRams.
