Rams appoint Borko Popic as head coach for 2019-20

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO – The Ryerson University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of Borko Popic as the Head Coach of the men’s basketball team for the 2019-20 season.

Popic, now the 13th head coach in Ryerson men's basketball history, has served as an associate head coach with the Rams for the past three seasons and moves into the role of head coach following Roy Rana’s departure to the Sacramento Kings of the NBA.

“We are very excited and honoured that Borko has agreed to step up and serve as head coach of our men’s basketball program for the 2019-20 season,” said Ryerson interim Director of Athletics and Recreation, Jeff Giles. “Borko’s leadership and dedication to the program over the past three years has been a major contributor to its success both on the court and in the delivery of an overall positive student-athlete experience. We are confident that under Borko’s leadership the program will continue to be one of the best in the country.”

Prior to joining the Rams in 2016, Popic was a teacher and the director of basketball operations at St. John’s Kilmarnock School in Kitchener, Ont. On top of his teaching and coaching, Popic spent time with the Canadian national basketball program, amassing video, statistical analysis and on court experience with the Senior Men’s team. He has also worked with the Canadian Men’s Junior team in the past, and has been a four-time coach with the World Team in the annual Nike Hoop Summit.

“I am very excited about this opportunity with the Ryerson University men’s basketball program,” said Popic. “I am very thankful to President Lachemi, the school administration, and the leadership team in the Department of Athletics and Recreation and am honoured to be the head coach of the Rams.

“It has been a privilege working with coach (Roy) Rana for the past three seasons. It is not a small task to step into the shoes of a great leader but it is a challenge I am looking forward to,” continued Popic. “My experience with the Rams, especially as head coach in regular season and playoff games over the past two years during coach Rana’s time with the national team, has prepared me for the opportunity to lead this group of young men with confidence.”

Popic’s first university coaching experience came between 2010-12 when he served as an assistant coach for the Golden Hawks at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Popic holds an English degree from the University of Guelph and a Masters of Science Education from Medaille College. He played postsecondary basketball at Virginia Military Institute and Hawaii Pacific before closing out his playing career in Canada at Guelph.

Coming off their fifth straight medal-winning appearance at the U SPORTS national championship, Popic and the Rams will open the 2019-20 regular season schedule on Friday, October 25 when they visit the York Lions.
