Souter has been named team leader of the women's squad for the 27th world university summer games, which is taking place next summer from July 6 to 17. Alberta's Liz Jepsen will take the reins as head coach, while UBC's Mark Rogers has been appointed as an assistant.
In his first year of head coaching duties with Ryerson, Souter led both the men's and women's teams to program-bests in wins as well as the post-season. The Graceland University graduate is a former all-American and NAIA national champion, and spent two seasons playing with the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS.
Last August in Shenzhen, China, Canada matched its best-ever result in women's soccer at the biennial FISU Games with a fifth-place finish. The Canadians had previously taken fifth position in 2005 in Turkey as well as in 1993, when the sport made its Universiade debut in Buffalo.
