TORONTO- Canada Basketball held tryouts over the May long weekend for the 2012 Cadet and Junior Men's National Team in Kerr Hall Gym at Ryerson University.
Junior Men's Head Coach and Ryerson bench-boss Roy Rana was on hand to begin putting together his squad which will travel to Brazil for the FIBA Americas U18 Championship from June 16-20, 2012.
The Americas will serve as a qualifier for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship. The top four finishers in the tournament will clinch a place in the global event.
Amongst those invited to the tryout was 17-year-old Andrew Wiggins, currently the No. 1 U.S. high-school prospect in the 2014 class. Rana and Wiggins helped the World Select Team defeat Team USA at the Nike Hoop Summit back in April, where the 6'7'' forward, who was the contest's youngest participant, took home game MVP honours with 20 points.
The Canadians have captured bronze at the past two FIBA Americas U18's, and are joined by Argentina, Colombia and Puerto Rico in Group B. The defending FIBA Americas champion USA are in Group A with Brazil, the Virgin Islands and Mexico.
Canada opens the tournament in Sao Sebastian do Paraiso on June 16 against Puerto Rico.
