From Sept. 6 to 9, Ryerson students, faculty, staff and the local community are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) at the Gardens.
The university has planned a series of events to kick off a new era of sports and recreation at Ryerson. The week begins with an open house and a women’s volleyball game at 2 p.m. followed by a men’s basketball at game 7 p.m. During half-time at the basketball game, Ryerson will unveil the new time capsule, containing items that speak to our generation of Ryerson community members. School of Interior Design students designed and built the new time capsule, which is the same size as the original and will be buried in the MAC where the original capsule was discovered during construction.
“As magnificent as this building is with its majestic roof, great restoration and place in Canadian history, it doesn't really come alive for me until the students fill it,” said Ivan Joseph, athletics director. “I can feel the change of energy on campus now that they have arrived and have been skating on the ice and packing the gym.”
For the Week of Welcome, the Ryerson Students’ Union has organized the 52nd annual Parade and Picnic concert to take place at the MAC on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. Artists Sean Kingston, Marianas Trench and Fefe Dobson will perform on stage at the same venue Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and The Who sang their hits. Visit www.weekofwelcome.ca to find out more about the parade and all the week-long events leading up to it.
A community skate on Mattamy Home Ice on Sept. 9 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. is open to the university and local community, so all can enjoy the new facility.
