Rams finish regular season with win over Queen's
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team closed their regular season schedule with a 71-61 victory over the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) had a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds while adding five assists to lead the Rams to the victory.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive groove in the first and after ten minutes the Gaels held a slim 13-12 lead.
Ryerson opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run to open up a 28-15 advantage with 4:10 remaining in the frame and extended that lead to 17 to lead 40-23 at the halftime break.
A pair of free throws from Jones with 8:35 left in the third gave the Rams their largest lead of the game at 45-25 but the Gaels turned up their defensive pressure and began to chip away at the deficit. Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) put the Gaels on his back and helped close the gap to single digits with a jumper to make it 53-44 with 1:35 to go in the frame but Ryerson continued to lead 58-46 through three quarters.
Queen’s got to within six points on several occasions in the fourth quarter but they could not complete the comeback as the Rams came away with the 71-61 victory.
Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) also finished in double digits for the Rams with ten points and added eight rebounds.
Roberts finished with a game-high 24 points in the loss for Queen’s while Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa, Ont.) added 13 points.
Ryerson finishes the regular season with a 16-6 record to finish third in the OUA east standings. The Gaels finish with a record of 10-12 and sit in sixth place.
