Rams dominate from start to finish for first win
WATERLOO, Ont. – A fast start and balanced scoring led the No. 3 ranked Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team to an 87-54 victory over the Waterloo Warriors to open the season on Wednesday.
Four different Rams scored ten points or more, including a team-high 17 point performance from Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.). JV Mukama (Hamilton, Ont.) netted 15 points, Bjorn Michaelsen (Otterburn Park, Que.) finished with 11 points and Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) recorded a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
The Rams got out to a quick start, opening the game on a 12-2 run and the offence continued to put up consistent numbers. At the end of the first quarter the visitors led 20-9.
Ryerson extended their lead by seven throughout the course of the second quarter to take a 40-22 advantage into the half.
Seemingly unsatisfied with the near 20-point cushion, the Rams offence came out firing in the third quarter to register 29 points in the ten minute frame to extend the lead to 30 at 69-39 after thirty minutes.
Both teams emptied their benches during the fourth quarter and Ryerson was able to wrap up the 87-54 win.
Ryerson shot 43.9% from the field compared to the Warriors’ 32.7% and the Rams won the rebounding battle handily at 46-27.
Myles Charvis was the only Waterloo player who could get his offensive game going, scoring 23 of his team’s 54 points.
The Rams will return to Waterloo on Friday evening to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff.
