Rams shutout Laurentian, undefeated in last six
The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team recorded a big road victory on Sunday, defeating the Laurentian Lady Vees 1-0 in Sudbury, Ont.
With the victory, the Rams extend their undefeated streak to six games, while moving into fourth spot in the nine-team OUA East division with a record of 3-2-4.
The Lady Vees had three shots on goal in the opening 25 minutes, of which two were headers that were wonderfully pushed away by Rams keeper Michelle Smiciklas (Oakville, Ont.). Ryerson would get a great opportunity in the 22nd minute as Meagan Blodgett (Peterborough, Ont.) took a long free kick that would only be stopped by the goal post. Ryerson would keep pressing with several attacks by Caleigh Copland (Peterborough, Ont.) before Stephanie Webster (Mississauga, Ont.) scored in the 34th minute for the Rams when she headed a ball from a cross into the top left corner out of the reach of Laurentian keeper Victoria Kulczycki (London, Ont.).
In the second half, Smiciklas made three key saves early on to keep the score at 1-0. In the 60th minute on a free kick, Smiciklas made another critical stop, knocking the ball over the net for one of her nine saves on the day. Copland had a great opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute but Kulczycki rushed out of her net and made a diving save. Laurentian would press in the final minutes, but the Ryerson defence was too strong.
The Rams return to action next weekend when they visit RMC (0-6-1) on Saturday and Queen's (5-1-1) on Sunday.
