LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Sport has a unique capacity to unite people – as participants and spectators – through an unparalleled sense of community. At Ryerson, one of the most diverse and innovative universities in North America, the Athletics and Recreation Department creates a spirit of belonging and pride for the over 40,000 students who call our downtown campus home.
In the last six years, players, coaches, support staff, administration and Rams supporters from around the university have worked together to transform the department. In so doing, we have achieved the goals set out in our initial strategic plan and developed a reputation across the country as one of the best university athletics programs.
Evidence of these accomplishments is everywhere. Our CIS teams are consistently ranked at the national level and poised to win provincial and national championships. Our recreational programs are bursting at the seams. Our facilities, including the new Mattamy Athletic Centre, are world class. Our student-athletes are excelling in their academic and service activities. And fan support for our teams – from attendance at games to widespread media attention – has never been higher.
We are the heartbeat of the community.
But we cannot rest on our laurels. We must build on our successes and achieve new levels of excellence and engagement.
In support of Ryerson’s new Academic Plan Our Time to Lead, we have developed a new strategic plan, Higher Expectations, that will guide us through 2020 and further embed Athletics and Recreation into the Ryerson experience.
The plan focuses on three strategic priorities: Foster Exceptional Student Experiences, Champion Vibrant Community Engagement, and Build Capacity and Operational Excellence. With this focus in mind, we intend to achieve a range of ambitious goals by 2020:
- Student-athlete average GPA that exceeds the general student body
- 50% of our CIS teams perennially nationally ranked
- 33% growth in intramural, club and recreational participation
- New indoor soccer field and clubhouse
- $1 million annual fundraising campaign
- Among top 10 in CIS for fan attendance and experience
- 50% increase in CIS Academic All-Canadians
- Nationally recognized marketing program
- A National Championship
Together, we can create exceptional student experiences and fulfill our commitment to developing and enriching the whole person. In so doing, we can help our students live with purpose and build a lifelong connection to each other and the university.
I welcome you to the Ryerson Athletics Ramily and invite you to experience all that we have to offer. I also hope that you will join us for one of our thrilling game-day events so you can experience the excitement and energy of Rams pride for yourself.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Dr. Ivan Joseph
