First Athletic Director Ted Toogood passes away
Ryerson Athletics and Recreation is mourning the loss of Alex Edgar (Ted) Toogood, the department's first-ever Athletic Director. Toogood passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31.
Toogood was hired by H.H. Kerr as Ryerson's first Athletic Director in 1949. During his 11 years in the position, he fought to gain membership in the Intercollegiate Intermediate League and in 1954 earned participant non-member status. In 1957, Ryerson gained full membership to the League's South Western Conference.
In addition to his duties as Athletic Director, he coached the Rams basketball and football teams from 1949-60. He led the Ryerson football team to the overall championship in 1958, defeating the University of Toronto. He was integral in the formation of intramural sports and clubs at Ryerson. His contribution to Athletics and Recreation is immeasurable.
Toogood was inducted into the Ryerson Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame as a builder in 2005. Toogood and his 1958 championship football team will be inducted into the Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame in the team category on September 23, 2011.
Before joining Ryerson, Toogood attended and played football at the University of Toronto. A talented halfback and kick returner, Toogood played five years for the Toronto Argonauts, winning two Grey Cups, including the memorable 1950 Mud Bowl at Varsity Stadium versus Winnipeg. He played in 52 regular season games and seven playoff games for the Argos.
A World War II Veteran, Toogood graduated from Runnymede C.I., University of Toronto, BPHE in 1948, and University of West Virginia, MSc in 1958.
In 1999, he was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame and was also named to the school's All-Century team. In 2010, he was entered into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.
