Volleyball athlete Carli Yim is Ryerson's Women of Influence award-winner. The fourth-year outside hitter and libero is about to complete her undergraduate degree in radio and television arts while picking up a minor in English.

Yim has been a tireless advocate for the Department of Athletics and Recreation, as well as Ryerson University itself. She is part of the Rising Rams program, where varsity athletes visit local elementary schools to speak with children about goal-setting, leadership and time management as well as teaching physical education classes.

She co-hosted two major events at Ryerson as a volunteer in 2011, including the mix and mingle at the 2011 Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) conference and the Dare to Explore Multicultural Show, which was part of the Ted Rogers Management Conference.

In November, the Markham, Ont. native was selected to speak on behalf of her fellow students at the official naming ceremony of the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens. Other key-note speakers of the event included Ryerson President Sheldon Levy and Adam B. Kahan, VP of University Advancement.

Yim has worked in the Department of Athletics as both an intramurals referee and athletics office assistant. She also participates in the Tri-Mentoring Program, garnering extensive volunteer experience outside the university.

What is your proudest academic achievement?

For me my proudest academic achievement will be when I graduate this coming fall.

What is your proudest athletic achievement?

My proudest athletic achievement is playing three different positions in one year and doing it well.

What is your most memorable community related moment?

It is definitely our team's humanitarian trip to Agua Prieta. We built a house for a family there and took part in an annual food distribution event where we gave out 1000 bags of groceries to community members and people who walked miles to line up and receive the bag.

What woman has most influenced you, and why?

My mom is for sure the woman who has influenced me more than anyone. She has always been a strong woman who has cared for nothing but her children. Anything you throw at my mom, she'll overcome.

What are your future plans?

Hopefully to work at Ryerson University and give back to the students by enhancing their experience.
