INTEGRATED SUPPORT TEAM (IST)
At Ryerson, our goal is to ensure that student-athletes receive the same quality education as non-athletes. We offer a comprehensive academic support program for all student-athletes, with a special focus on our first-year athletes. As you work to acquire the necessary skills to become successful in your studies, our programs aid you in developing the competencies required to cope with the rigorous demands of student-athlete life, and to resume responsibility for your own academic success. Our variety of programs include drop-in help with Lauren Wilson, our Academic Services Coordinator, as well as academic peer mentors, an academic success program for additional support, mandatory study hall hours, and a first year student-athlete orientation to discuss information needed for academic success in your first semester.
The Athletic Therapy Clinic is open to all varsity athletes. Our team of Certified Athletic Therapists is run by our head therapist, Jerome Camacho, who oversees the assessments of emergency care, first aid evaluation, and rehabilitation procedures. We also provide services from Athletic Therapy Students enrolled in the Athletic Therapy programs at Sheridan College and York University. They can provide and assist with injury care under the supervision of Athletic Therapists. Our Athletic Therapy Students are assigned to each team and they are responsible for covering all practices and games, both home and away. Our Athletic Therapy clinic also offers service from our Sports Medicine Physician, Dr. Darren Edelist, and from our Bracing/Orthotics Specialist, Annette McLelland.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
All student-athletes will participate weekly in evidence-based strength and conditioning programs as designed and implemented by our Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Sam Walls. Strength and conditioning workouts will be scheduled in cooperation with the head coaches and Head Athletic Therapist for both teams and individuals. You will be provided with guidance and proper training techniques to maximize performance and minimize injury. If you are injured, the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator will work with Athletic Therapy staff to design and implement individualized therapeutic exercises to assist you with your rehabilitation.
COMMUNITY AND ENGAGEMENT
Ryerson Athletics is intentionally committed to being a leader in community outreach and engagement. Each Ryerson Ram student-athlete holds a responsibility to the wellbeing of the community. By dedicating their energy, and honing their passions our Rams commit to completing several hours of community outreach throughout the academic year. In addition, each athletic team is responsible for planning and executing a student-led initiative based on a need that they see within the community. Suzanne Fenerty and Danica Williams, the Ryerson Athletic Volunteer Experience (RAVE) team, are available to support our student-athletes and facilitate these community engagement opportunities. Two outreach programs you can get involved in include Rising Rams and Rams in Training which promote physical activity and life skills to youth.
