Adika Peter-McNeilly signs pro contract in Germany
Fresh off of his First-Team All-Canadian season, which saw him lead the Rams' OUA title defence and a silver medal finish at nationals, Peter-McNeilly has signed his first professional contract with MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg of Germany's Basketball Bundesliga as well as in Europe's Basketball Champions League.
Peter-McNeilly was a cornerstone of the Rams' transformation to perennial OUA contender, and he did so with an ability to take over the game on both sides of the floor. His 19.2 points per game led the team last season and were good enough for fourth in the OUA.
“It’s an opportunity that I’m excited to take on,” said Peter-McNeilly to Bryan Meler of The Eyeopener. “Playing for MHP is a blessing.”
Adika has prior experience playing outside of Canada, spending one year at Clarendon College, a Division I JuCo program in Texas, before joining the Rams in 2013-14. Despite the international experience, when considering his professional options, Germany wasn't necessarily on his radar.
“It was the first time I heard of the team” explained Peter-McNeilly about the first time his agent brought up MHP Riesen as a potential suitor. “It was a bit of a shock, I had to do a bit of research.”
Peter-McNeilly was the beneficiary of tremendous support from his family and the Rams faithful — including several appearances of a large cardboard cutout of his face in Coca-Cola Court — so he understands that he will be facing some differences next season.
“It’s going to be different playing in Germany after playing here in Toronto in front of my family,” said Peter-McNeilly. “But I think my experience with Ryerson is going to help with my transition.”
"It's new to sign players right out of Canadian universities, but Canadian basketball has developed strongly," said Ludwigsburg coach John Patrick.
Ludwigsburg begins their season on September 9 when they take on Istanbul BBSK. If you brush up on your German, you can follow the team on Twitter @MHP_RIESEN. Otherwise, you can stay up to date in English at eurobasket.com.
