Rams offense clicks in dominant showing over Laurentian
TORONTO — Strong and consistent offensive pressure aided the Ryerson Rams in defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Downsview Park.
The Rams began the game by putting on good pressure off the top, creating two high-danger chances in the first seven minutes of the match. Ryerson goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula (Brampton, Ont.) stayed strong on the back end throughout the first half of the game, making four diving saves in her clean-sheet effort.
In the 38th minute, Rams defender Gillian Rossi (Mississauga, Ont.) connected on a rebound to score her first OUA goal and give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Rossi, a senior playing her second-last career game with the team, says the goal was a great way to cap off four years at Ryerson.
“I’m still processing it,” says Rossi about the goal. “I’ve always wanted to score, but defending has been my priority. Still, it’s definitely a nice bonus and I’m really happy with the outcome.”
Just a few minutes later, freshman midfielder Chloe Zomparelli (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also scored the first goal of her OUA career, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Katherine Sollbach (Burlington, Ont.) scored Ryerson’s final goal of the match in the 68th minute, carrying the ball down the wing and firing it past Laurentian keeper Caitlin McNamara (Ottawa, Ont.).
The Rams walked off the field as winners for the third time this season, taking a 3-0 win over the Voyageurs at home.
Ryerson head coach Natalie Bukovec says she was thrilled with her team’s performance today.
“Our success as a team comes when we’re cohesive,” says Bukovec. “We took a more united approach today and I thought it showed on the field.”
Despite the positive showing, the Rams were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs following the game after the Toronto Varsity Blues earned their fifth regulation win of the year on Saturday evening.
Ryerson will be back in action tomorrow, October 21, at Downsview Park against the Lakers. In their final game of the season, the Rams will be celebrating the careers of their graduating seniors as they hit the field one last time in the Ryerson jersey. Game time is set for 3:30 PM.
