Efficient attacking leads Rams to sweep of Lions

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - The No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams women's volleyball got back in the win column on Friday night with a 3-0 sweep (25-5, 30-28, 25-14) over the York Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Ryerson entered Friday's contest fresh off their first loss since February of 2017 and they came out hungry to return to the win column. An incredible 15-0 run to open the first set gave the Rams all the breathing room they would need, as everything went right for the visitors who claimed an impressive 25-5 first set.

The Rams posted 14 kills in the opening set against just two errors. But it wasn't just their offence that was clicking, as the Rams tallied six blocks in the opening frame which left the Lions searching for answers. York managed just two kills against eight attacking errors in the set.

Credit where credit is due, however, as the Lions rebounded from their disastrous start to claim a 7-1 advantage early in the second set. It was almost as if the teams were flipping the script - everything went right for the Lions to start while Ryerson gave away four straight points with errors.

Trailing 14-9, Ryerson received a spark from first year middle, Katelyn Grasman. After tallying a kill, Grasman went back to the service line and fired off three straight aces to bring the Rams within one. That stretch got the Rams within striking distance and they would later complete the comeback, but not before some extra points were needed.

The Rams earned their first lead of the second set at 18-17 but the Lions were quick to respond and had regained a three point edge at 23-20. With their backs against the wall, Ryerson tallied three straight points to tie the set at 23-23 and from there the teams went back and forth. Tied at 28-28, the Rams finally broke through as Cailin Wark tallied a kill from the right side before Grasman and Lauren Veltman combined for a block to give Ryerson a 30-28 set win and 2-0 match lead.

In the third the Rams posted a 0.412 hitting percentage with 16 kills and just two errors which helped them establish a double digit set win at 25-14 to complete the three set sweep.

Veltman finished with a game-high 11 kills while Theanna Vernon led all players with 17 points. Her scoreline included nine kills, six blocks, and two service aces. Libero Olivia Yang set a new career-high with 12 digs in the win.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday night when they visit the Nipissing Lakers. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. and is the last game for the Rams before the holiday break.
