Rams visit Windsor, Western to open 2019

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - The No. 8 ranked Ryerson Rams women's hockey team opens the 2019 portion of their schedule this weekend when they head west to visit the Windsor Lancers and No. 9 ranked Western Mustangs.

Ryerson posted one of its strongest starts to a season in program history, entering 2019 with nine wins and a 7-3-2-0 record overall which tops the OUA standings. The Rams will be looking to capitalize on three available points in Windsor against the last place Lancers.

The Lancers have struggled this year and have yet to find the win column in regulation time, owning an 0-10-1-1 record for just one win. Windsor has struggled offensively with just 17 goals on the season while allowing a league-worst 41 goals against in 12 games. Windsor has allowed a league-leading 10 power play goals against, which is something the Rams may want to try and spark their power play with.

Ryerson's power play is operating at just 8.5% so far this season - four goals in 47 opportunities - and if the Rams can start to turn up the heat on the player advantage, that will only add to their offensive prowess.

After Friday night's tilt in Windsor the Rams will head towards home with a stop in London to take on the No. 9 ranked Western Mustangs. Western is one of five teams in a log jam for second place in the OUA with 24 points, just one behind the Rams. The Mustangs own a 7-2-0-3 record with one of their wins coming against Ryerson in late November.

Western is led by the OUA leading goal scorer April Clarke. Clarke has 11 goals and 17 points this season and has already shown the Rams how dangerous she can be, scoring twice and adding an assist in the Mustangs' 4-0 shutout win over Ryerson earlier this season.

Should the Rams prevail on Saturday afternoon, they'll need to shut down Clarke at one end and fire as many pucks towards probable starting goaltender Carmen Lasis, who currently ranks fifth in the OUA in goals against average and save percentage. Lasis made 39 saves last time out against Ryerson.

The 2019 portion of the schedule begins for the Rams on Friday, January 4 when they visit the Windsor Lancers for 7:30 p.m. puck drop. Ryerson will have a short turn around as they take on the Western Mustangs at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 5. Both games will be available on OUA.tv
