Rams hope home ice sparks bounce back from slow start

By Luke Bellus

TORONTO - After opening 2019 on the road, the Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team is back on home ice this weekend taking on the Queen’s Gaels and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks.

This weekend begins a stretch of home games for the Rams. Ryerson will be home for six of their next seven games, which is something that should be a nice change of pace from all of the travel in the opening semester.

The Rams will be looking to get back on track Friday night against the Gaels after leaving points on the table against a very beatable Windsor team and a team tight with them in the standings – the Western Mustangs – just one week ago.

Friday night will be the second meeting between Ryerson and Queen’s, and it was a 3-0 Rams win against the Gaels on Nov. 11 that put the league on notice. Queen’s sat atop the the OUA going into that matchup and Ryerson showed that they were capable of walking into their building and taking three points from them.

Since that game Queen’s has fallen in the standings and now sit two points behind the fifth placed Rams.

The following day the UOIT Ridgebacks will be in town. At the time of this article the Ridgebacks have the third worst goals against number in the league. A large part of that is because of when the Rams showed up in Oshawa in early November and beat them 5-1.

That day it was Ryerson coming out with a fast start, and not talking their foot off of the gas on offence, while also shutting down UOIT on defence.

As the season goes on and the standings get tighter these games will become more and more important. Currently just five points separates second and seventh place. Ryerson will need to keep pace with other teams to stay in their spot.

After a rough opening to the 2019 calendar expect Ryerson to try and spark their 2018 magic as they take on two teams they found success against in the first semester while they look to take charge in the standings in the second semester.

Friday’s game will drop the puck at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday will be an afternoon tilt at 4:15 p.m. Both games will be at the Mattamy Athletic Centre and you can follow us on Twitter and Instagram for all of the live-in game updates.
