Rams announce third recruit in Giardetti

By Andrea Elliott
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team is pleased to add Olivia Giardetti to the 2017-18 recruiting class.

A native of Whitby, Ont., Giardetti is a multi-sport athlete who spent the past hockey season with the Whitby Jr. Wolves in the Provincial Women's Hockey League (PWHL). The Wolves posted an impressive 26-8-3-1 record to rank second in the 20-team league.

During the 2015-16 season Giardetti played for the Whitby Wolves Midget AA team and claimed the bronze medal at the provincial championship. The forward was an assistant captain on that squad.

Giardetti has also found success on the rugby pitch having competed at the Canadian Independent School Tournament with her Trafalgar Castle School team. Giardetti lists traveling to Victoria, B.C. and competing against other private schools with players at the national level as one of the highlights of her athletic career.

On the ice, Giardetti is regarded as a power forward and somewhat of a rare commodity.

"Olivia is a right-shot power forward, something rare to find in women's hockey. What really stands out is her willingness to do what needs to be done for the team, and doing it the right way," said Ryerson head coach Lisa Haley about Giardetti. "Without a doubt, “Liv” will be very well-respected by her teammates and coaches at Ryerson simply because her teammates are her first priority. She gets “hard work” scoring chances, and she is a selfless defender. Olivia understands her strengths as a player and she thrives in that role."

The newest Ram will be enrolled in the RTA: Sport Media program starting this fall and is looking forward to starting her journey.

"I chose Ryerson for multiple reasons that overall made it easy to realize it was the school for me. Learning about sport media in one of the biggest sport cities while playing the sport I love is the perfect set up for me. The athletic facilities are next to none and the location of this amazing hands-on university has made me very excited for my upcoming years as a Ram," said Giardetti.

Stay tuned for more recruit releases as they become available.
