Hughes, a native of Oakville, Ont., has spent the past two years playing in Truro, N.S. with the Truro Bearcats in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) and will return to Toronto to play his post-secondary career with the Rams.
Hughes and his Bearcats won the MHL championship this past season and went on to represent the MHL at the Fred Page Cup. Hughes was named the game MVP of the Bearcats' final tournament game.
The left winger is known as a solid two-way player who can play on the power play and the penalty kill. Hughes describes himself as a "versatile forward who can play both ends of the ice" and a "patient and gritty player who isn't afraid to go to the dirty areas" on the ice.
This past season Hughes scored 22 goals and had 64 total points in 50 regular season games.
Prior to heading east Hughes played one season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds before playing with his hometown Oakville Blades in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).
An Ontario Scholar (four-time honour roll high school student) out of Holy Trinity C.S.S. in Oakville and an educational award winner with Truro, Hughes will enter Ryerson's Business Management program this fall.
Hughes' commitment to the Rams bring the 2017-18 recruiting class to five players thus far. Stay tuned for more recruit announcements as they become available.
