Rams fall in London to end weekend trip winless

By Ryan Bacic

LONDON, Ont. – In what proved to be a disappointing evening to cap off an unfortunate road-trip weekend, the Rams fell 66-55 to the Western Mustangs on Saturday night in London.

The loss proved to not only be ill-timed, as the Rams have now started off the regular season 1-2, but also unexpected given that the Mustangs team is predominately made up of a younger line-up.

However, whatever inexperience the Mustang players possessed this evening, they certainly made-up for it with their intensity and offensive connectivity. Throughout the evening, the Mustangs players made nearly half of all field goal attempts they put up, while additionally connecting on nearly eighty percent of all their free throw attempts. This stands in contrast to the Rams figures of thirty-nine percent and seventy-six percent, respectively. Additionally, the Mustangs forwards dominated play in the paint, on both ends of the court, combining for thirty-eight total rebounds on the evening, in contrast to the Rams figure of only twenty.

However, to their credit, the Rams did all they could defensively. With the Mustangs attempting to facilitate a greater degree of ball movement upon the offensive end, the Rams were able to pick off a number of steals throughout the evening that disrupted the pace of play for the home team. Unfortunately for the Rams, much like in their game against Windsor on Friday evening, the principal problems stem from both their inability to connect on offense, and their inability to stop opposing playmakers at the point.

For this evening, that meant not being able to shut down the Western guard duo of Mackenzie Puklicz (London, Ont.) and Maddy Horst (Baden, Ont.) who combined for twenty-seven points, six assists, and fourteen rebounds.

While the Rams possessed an intimidating offensive duo of their own this evening, in the form of Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.), who recorded fifteen points on the evening, and veteran Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.), their lack of front-court defensive pressure has proved to be damaging to their overall playing ability.

The Rams will be back in action on Wednesday, November 8, as they take on the Brock Badgers for their home opener at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at 6:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to come out and #PacktheMAC to show support for the team. However, for those who cannot attend in person, they can still catch all of the action by watching the game on, and by following the Ryerson Rams on twitter @ryersonrams.
