Rams sweep Excalibur in three sets

By Christian Ryan

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) alone outscored the Trent Excalibur roster, collectively, as the Ryerson Rams swept the match 3-0 Sunday night in Peterborough.

Coming off of a season-opening victory against defending the OUA champions, the McMaster Marauders, the Rams knew they had to follow up on their grand opening. Heading into the season’s second game, coach Adam Simac prepared his team for the best the Excalibur had to offer.

“We know that [Trent] will be scrappy and fight for every ball,” he said. “We have to expect that every team will now be coming at us with nothing to lose - playing loose and free and risking on each ball.”

The Excalibur showed this to be true immediately, leading to back and forth battles throughout the match. Doubling the kills of their opposition in the first set, the Rams moved from a tense 25-17 win into a more comfortable 25-12 second set.

In the third, the Excalibur had to scramble to save themselves from the sweep. They took the lead early on, pushing for the chance to come back in a fourth set. However, the Rams were finding opportunities all over the court and took the third set by a more slim 25-22 margin.

In Trent’s pushes, Brett Whitley (Brighton, Ont.) boasted a strong blocking presence. In turn, the Rams offensive output was bolstered by the 30 assists of Adam Anagnostopoulos (Waterloo, Ont.) to help lift the Rams over the Excalibur and into a 2-0 record to kick off the season.

Heading out of their strong start, the Rams now set their sights on the York Lions. On Friday, November 10th, the Rams will face the Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre to close out their season-opening road trip. Then, they will have their home opener at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, playing host to the Trent Excalibur on November 12th.
