Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week
The Ryerson Rams Athletes of the Week are presented by Boston Pizza at Front & John
Third-year forward Andrew Buck is the Boston Pizza Male Athlete of the Week after leading the men's hockey team in a hard-fought series against UQTR in the OUA East Quarter-Finals this past week. The Newmarket, Ont. native tallied three assists in the playoff opener at George Bell Arena, as the Rams lit up the Patriotes 9-2 to draw first blood in the series. The team captain then put together an incredible individual performance on Saturday in Trois-Rivières, Que., tallying a hat-trick in a 7-5 loss that sent the series to a third and deciding game, where the men would go down 5-3 to the CIS No. 10-ranked Patriotes. Buck finished with six points in three playoff games after ending the regular season tied for the team-lead with 22 points and 10 goals.
Fencer Joanna Kolbe and figure skater Lisa MakeevaAndre have been named the Boston Pizza Female Athletes of the Week after each won a gold medal at their respective OUA Championships this past week. Kolbe successfully defended her individual épée title at the Women's Fencing Championships at Brock University on Saturday, claiming the Dr. Al English Trophy for the second year in a row. The Mississauga native also led the Rams to the team épée gold for the first time in program history. At the OUA Figure Skating Championships, Makeeva finished atop the podium in the gold free skate on Friday morning to earn the Rams first and only gold medal of the competition. This was an improvement for the Toronto native, who skated to a silver medal in the same event at the Fall Invitational back in late November. Makeeva earned OUA all-star honours for her performance, while the Rams finished fifth overall at the championships, which was hosted by Western University.
