Rams find the win column with sweep of Gaels

By Andrea Elliott

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season on Friday night, sweeping away the Queen’s Gaels (26-24, 25-23, 25-18) in Kingston.

Making her return to her old stomping grounds, Becky Zeeman (Ottawa, Ont.) put up a team-high 14 kills to lead the Rams over her former squad.

Despite the big night from Zeeman on the outside, the key to the Rams victory was the play up the middle. The duo of Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) and Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) combined for 15 kills and out-blocked the Gaels handily.

In the first set Ryerson held a 16-10 advantage at the technical timeout but the Gaels rallied down the stretch to tie it up at 24 apiece. The Rams showed their composure though and a big kill from Vernon helped right the ship as Ryerson closed the set with a 26-24 victory.

The second set started with strong serving from both sides, leading to lots of broken plays and easy attacks on each side of the net. The back and forth play led to a slim 16-15 advantage for the Rams at the technical timeout. Down the stretch the Rams took advantage of some sloppy Gaels play which included a Queen’s service error, attack error, and out of rotation call on consecutive points to give Ryerson a three-point spread. One of Zeeman’s 14 kills on the night closed the set as the Rams doubled their advantage to two sets to none.

The tight affair continued in the early stages of the third until Kristine Yan (Markham, Ont.) provided a lift from the service line. Strong serving led to some easy points for the Rams who used a 6-0 run to take an 18-13 lead and control in the middle stages of the set. Following an exchange of points it was Vernon’s turn for an extended serving run and she dropped the only two service aces of the game for the Rams to propel them to a 24-15 advantage. With nine match points to work with, Ryerson cruised to a 25-18 win to complete the three set sweep.

The Rams now sport a 1-2 record this season and will look to pull back to .500 when they return to the court on Saturday evening against the RMC Paladins. First serve flies at 6:00 in Kingston.
