Zeeman leads Rams to second straight win
KINGSTON, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team completed the weekend sweep in Kingston on Saturday night, defeating the RMC Paladins 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-18) following a win over Queen’s on Friday.
For the second straight night it was Becky Zeeman (Ottawa, Ont.) leading the Rams with a game-high 13 kills and 16 total points.
The Rams offence struggled in the first set, committing 11 attack errors and hitting just 7.8%, but Ryerson held RMC to just seven kills and were able to pull out a 26-24 win.
Ryerson sharpened things up in the second, limiting their errors to just three in the set. They also played well at the net, forcing the Paladins into more errors than kills to cruise to a 25-11 win.
Tough serving by the Rams was another key to victory on Saturday as Ryerson posted 11 service aces from seven different players. The service pressure gave RMC some difficulties and in the third set the Rams were able to put the game away with a 25-18 win.
First year middle Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) had a strong night finishing second on the team with nine kills. Zeeman matched her 13 kills with a game-high 13 digs while libero Julie Longman (Newmarket, Ont.) added 12 digs and Jena Bonello (Vaughan, Ont.) posted a career-high 11 digs.
RMC’s Julia Krebs-Vandeloosdrecht finished with a team-high six kills in the loss.
Ryerson improves to 2-2 on the season with the win while the Paladins drop to 0-3 on the year. The Rams are back in action next Friday, November 11 for their home opener against the Nipissing Lakers.
