TORONTO – Sofia Paska recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double as her fifth 20+ night of the season was enough to lift the Ryerson Rams women’s basketball team to a 64-51 win over the York Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre Saturday night.
The combination of Paska and Kellie Ring’s 14 points were simply too much for the Lions to overcome in the loss, despite a late push in the second half.
The Rams opened the game with a 9-0 run and kept their lead to nine by taking a 21-12 lead into the second quarter. The Rams did an excellent job in the second quarter by getting to the line for easy points.
C’iarah Gabriel-Robinson of the Rams heated up in the second both on the defensive glass and from the offensive floor. She finished the night with seven points and five rebounds as her play helped the Rams score 21 in the quarter to take a 42-24 lead into the dressing room at the half.
Robinson continued her stellar play into the third quarter and helped bolster a 23-point lead for the Rams midway through the quarter. An Emma Fraser jump shot assisted by Faatimah A with three seconds left lifted the Rams off their seats on the bench as the Rams led 55-34 after three quarters.
The Lions showed incredible desperation to start the fourth and bolted for an 11-2 run. Shauney Fischer, who led the Lions with 12 points on the night, took over on the glass and gave the Lions a number of opportunities to capitalize on the fast break. Fischer knocked down two final free throws for the Lions but that was as close as they got as the Rams held on for a 64-51 win.
With the victory, the Rams pull within two points of the first place Queen’s Gaels in the East. The Rams now hold a 9-2 record for 18 points and are an impressive 9-1 in their last 10 games.
The Rams return to game action next Saturday, January 21st, as they travel to the Physical Activities Complex to take on the Waterloo Warriors.
