Gee-Gees hand Rams first loss
OTTAWA, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team have fallen for the first time in 2017. In the final match of their Ottawa road trip, the Ottawa Gee-Gees toppled the previously undefeated Rams 6-0.
For Ottawa, the offensive onslaught began early in the first half and did not relent through the following 90 minutes of play. After some back and forth shots between the two teams, the Gee-Gees opened the scoring as Katherine Bearne (Halifax, N.S.) found the back of the net in the 11th minute. After another goal by Faythe Lou (Surrey, B.C.) three minutes later, halftime saw Ottawa leading Ryerson 2-0.
After allowing two goals on seven shots in the first half, the Rams looked to increase their offensive and defensive presence in the second half. Goalkeeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) faced seven shots in the first half and would need that pressure from the Gee-Gees removed. Unfortunately, despite an increased offensive effort by the Rams that saw Victoria Watson (Scarborough, Ont.), Sidnee Richardson (Calgary, Alta.), and Soraya El-Houni (Toronto, Ont.) with scoring chances, they were turned away by Ottawa keepers Margot Shore (Ottawa, Ont.) and Julie-Anne Lamarche (Rockland, Ont.).
Ottawa recorded four more goals in seven shots in the second half, including a second goal of the game for Bearne. The loss comes suddenly for a Ryerson team that had gone undefeated in their first three games, including a 2-1 victory the previous day against the Carleton Ravens.
The Rams will look to return to their winning ways at home at Downsview Park on September 9th. Playing host to the UOIT Ridgebacks, Ryerson will take the week to regroup and prepare for their second homestand weekend of the season.
